Join us for The ABC of It: Why Children’s Books Matter — a major exhibit from the Kerlan Collection that features 250 books and objects that illuminate the importance of children’s literature throughout history. Immerse yourself in over 200 selected treasures including original art and manuscripts — from Millions of Cats to Poky Little Puppy to Beatrix Potter’s sketches for Peter Rabbit — a lush range of materials that explore the impact of children’s literature in society and culture over time.

The curator will talk in room 120 about The ABC of It and the materials in the Kerlan Collection. These materials are a jumping off point on Why Children’s Books Matter. We will discuss a bit of the history of children’s books through the words of historian Leonard Marcus, the teaching of children in the home and school, and the art of the picture book. Topics will include pedagogy, history, censorship, racism, and children’s book publishing. All are welcome. We encourage discussion.

After 15 years as a teacher/librarian for preK-8th grade, an instructor of teachers at the Bank Street College of Education in Children’s Literature, teaching graduate students Diversity in Children’s Literature, Children’s Literature Selection and Evaluation, Children’s Book Publishing 101 and Storytelling and Folklore, Lisa Von Drasek arrived in the Midwest as the Curator of the Children’s Literature Research Collection of the University of Minnesota. Lisa has served on numerous award committees including the Newbery, the Caldecott, The New York Times Best Illustrated, The National Book Awards, Notable Children’s Books, and the Ezra Jack Keats Awards. Her research includes gender, diversity, economic disparity, and child development in children’s books and media. Her mission is to provide access to the primary source documents, art, and rare books held in the University of Minnesota Archives and Special Collection.
