By November 1, 2018May 13th, 2021The Kerlan Blog

My 10 year old likes fantasy, realistic fiction, and historical fiction. She has read the Wings of Fire series, Harry Potter, etc. Are there any series or books that you might recommend?

Historic Fiction

Birchbark House–  Louise Erdrich
First of five books in the series, Louise Erdrich brings us into the daily life of a young Ojibwa girl in 1840s near Lake Superior.

All of a Kind Family– Sydney Taylor
Set in turn-of-the-century, lower east side New York City we follow the adventures of a family of Jewish siblings.
The War that saved my life– Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
During WWII, children were separated from their families and evacuated to safety in the countryside. Ada’s journey took her from her abusive mother and to a much better life.

One Crazy Summer– Rita Williams Garcia
In the 1960’s, three sisters from Brooklyn, NY find themselves transplanted to Los Angeles for the summer, experiencing a very different environment, customs, and home.
Seeds of America series- Laurie Halse Andersen
Meticulously researched, compelling plot, realistic characters engage readers in the struggle for freedom during the American revolution.

Out of the Dust– Karen Hesse
Set in the time of the Dust Bowl, Hesse creates a portrait of a survivor in spare free verse.

Inquisitor’s Tale or The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog  by Adam Gidwitz

What I love best about historic fiction is that I get to travel back in time. Gidwitz takes us to a medieval world and weaves a narrative that is adventurous and spellbinding.

Soonish- Speculative Fiction
