“Journey to Joy: Rise, Relevance, Representation in Children’s Picture Books,” a new exhibit from the Kerlan currently on display at Elmer L. Andersen Library, showcases LOTS of books — over 300 unique titles, in fact!
We’ve received many requests for our entire bibliography, which you can now access as a downloadable PDF. Below, see an overview of the types of work you’ll find in the exhibit, and how we organized these titles across four floors of Andersen Library.
Don’t forget to visit before the exhibit closes on Jan. 3, 2025!
Exhibit overview
The ground floor’s theme is representation. Here, we focus on the work of three Native Minnesotan illustrators and their publishers: Marlena Myles, Jonathan Thunder, and Annette Lee.
The theme of the first floor is representation. We celebrate the Ezra Jack Keats Award winners — writers and illustrators who are new to their profession and honored for their excellence in art and writing that reflects the diversity of children’s experiences.
On the second floor, we focus on relevance. Why do the Archives and Special Collections hold the manuscripts and art of children’s book creators? The Ezra Jack Keats Fellows share what they researched in the Kerlan and how those collections informed their own creative work.
Finally, on the third floor, we explore the theme of rise by diving into the history of children’s picture book images. Who is represented? How do I select and evaluate children’s books for my home, classroom, or library?
